Thank you to everyone who joined us on February 22, 2022 for It Starts With Us: Let’s Talk About Sex (and Gender)!

This event featured a thought-provoking presentation on the importance of using precise language when discussing sex and gender. The presentation shared findings from a literature review and environmental scan, which inspired Dr. Wiedmeyer and Dr. Lowik, with the help of advisors, experts, and students, to conduct a curriculum audit of the UBC Faculty of Medicine MD program. The presentation explored the main barriers to person-centred health care, and the consequences of those barriers for intersex, trans, non-binary, and Two-Spirit people. Finally, this It Starts With Us event presented an opportunity to reflect on why we ask about sex and gender in clinical and administrative settings, and invited us to be very thoughtful about when, how, and why we gather this information.
